His biggest hit in 1969, “Make Me an Island,” reached No. 3 in Britain and No. 1 in 14 other countries. Other hits that climbed the European charts included “You’re Such a Good-Looking Woman” in 1970, “Lady in Blue” in 1975 and “I Need You” in 1977. … Read full obituary

Benazir Bhutto assassinated

Posted: Thursday, December 27th, 2007 6:33 am

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan

Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, aides said.

The death of the 54-year-old charismatic former prime minister threw the campaign for the Jan. 8 parliamentary elections into chaos and created fears of mass protests and violence across the nuclear-armed nation, an important U.S. ally in the war on terrorism.

The attacker struck just minutes after Bhutto addressed thousands of supporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, 8 miles south of Islamabad. She was shot in the neck and chest by the attacker, who then blew himself up, said Rehman Malik, Bhutto’s security adviser.

At least 20 others were killed in the attack. …

Bhutto’s supporters at the hospital exploded in anger, smashing the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit. …

No one claimed responsibility for the attack. But some of Bhutto’s supporters at the hospital began chanting, “Killer, Killer, Musharraf,” referring to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, Bhutto’s main political opponent. A few began stoning cars outside. … Read full story

Pinup star Jeanne Carmen, 77

Posted: Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 8:38 pm

From JR: I had the great pleasure of meeting and chatting with Jeanne Carmen several times over the past decade; she was a droll, very relaxed, charming lady who never lost that old-Hollywood glamour for a moment. R.I.P., Jeanne, and thanks for all the laughs.

Jeanne Carmen, a longtime Orange County resident who earned stardom as a bombshell pinup, trick-shot golfer and “Queen of the B Movies,” has died. She was 77.

Carmen succumbed to lymphoma at her Turtle Ridge home on Thursday, according to her son, Brandon James. …

Jeanne Laverne Carmen was born Aug. 4, 1930 in Paragould, Ark., where she picked cotton with her family before running away at 13 with dreams of the silver screen. …

Her platinum blonde hair and hourglass build (36-26-36 measurements) landed her an off-Broadway job as a burlesque dancer, a gig she parlayed into photo shoots for then-risqué girlie magazines and roles in a wealth of bawdy, low-budget flicks that won her the title of “Queen of the B Movies.” …

Carmen also said she became a close confidant of Marilyn Monroe, though many bloggers have disputed the claim. … Read full obituary

Michael Klein, Pacificor head & former eGroups CEO, 37

Posted: Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 2:27 pm

Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) — Michael Klein, the owner of California hedge-fund firm Pacificor LLC, his teenage daughter, Talia, and a pilot died after their private plane crashed near Panama’s tallest mountain.

Francesca Lewis, the 12-year-old friend of Klein’s daughter, who was 13, survived and is in the hospital with multiple injuries…

Lewis was found walking less than a kilometer from the site of the crash, 7,536 feet up on the eastern side of Volcan Baru, de la Hoz said. She was taken to a private clinic in David, Panama’s third-largest city, where she will meet her parents, he said. …

The hedge-fund manager started MIBEK Corp., a developer of financial-analysis software, in 1989 and sold the company in 1992. He then founded software company Transoft Networks Inc., which Hewlett-Packard Co. bought in 1999, according to the Pacificor Web site.

He subsequently became president and chief executive officer of eGroups Inc., the world’s largest group e-mail communication service. Yahoo! Inc. acquired that company for $450 million in 2000, Pacificor’s Web site says. … Read full obituary

Choreographer Michael Kidd, 92

Posted: Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 12:59 pm

Choreographer Michael Kidd, whose joyously athletic dances for ballet, Broadway and Hollywood delighted audiences for half a century and won him five Tonys and an Oscar, has died.

Kidd’s nephew, Robert Greenwald, told The New York Times that … Kidd’s age is often listed as 88, but … his uncle was actually 92. …

To moviegoers, Kidd was best known for the 1954 film “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” in which a bunch of earthy backwoodsmen (some of them really stage dancers) prance exuberantly with their prospective brides.

He also directed dances for Danny Kaye in “Knock on Wood,” took Fred Astaire out of his top hat to play a private eye in a Mickey Spillane spoof in “The Band Wagon,” and taught Marlon Brando how to hoof for “Guys and Dolls.”

There is no Oscar category for choreography, so the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented Kidd with a special award in 1997 for “his services in the art of the dance in the art of the screen.” …

For his work in theater, Kidd won Tonys for “Finian’s Rainbow” (1947), “Guys and Dolls” (1951), “Can-Can” (1954), “Li’l Abner” (1957) and “Destry Rides Again” (1960). … Read full obituary

TOLEDO, Ohio — J. Russell Coffey, the oldest known surviving U.S. veteran of World War I, has died. The retired teacher, one of only three U.S. veterans from the “war to end all wars,” was 109.

Coffey died Thursday at the Briar Hill Health Campus in North Baltimore, where he had lived for the past four or five years, said Gaye Boggs, nursing director at the nursing home. No cause of death has been determined, she said Friday. His health began failing in October.

“We’re sure going to miss him,” Boggs said. “He was our most famous resident, that’s for sure.” …

Coffey never saw combat because he was still in basic training when the war ended.

The two remaining U.S. veterans are Frank Buckles, 106, of Charles Town, W.Va.; and Harry Richard Landis, 108, of Sun City Center, Fla., according to the Veterans Affairs Department. In addition, John Babcock, 107, of Spokane, Wash., served in the Canadian army and is the last known Canadian veteran of the war. … Read full obituary
