Ex-S.F. Sheriff & Police Chief Richard Hongisto, 67, found dead

SAN FRANCISCO — Former San Francisco sheriff and police Chief Richard Hongisto died early Thursday morning at the age of 67, the city medical examiner’s office announced.

Hongisto was pronounced dead at his Third Street home at 3:03 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy was being performed, but Hongisto’s friend Lee Houskeeper said he died of an apparent heart attack. He “had a bout with prostate cancer” about two years ago but had not been ill recently, Houskeeper said.

Hongisto was a longtime public servant in San Francisco and had worked as a police officer, assessor and supervisor and ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for San Francisco Mayor in addition to being sheriff and police chief. … Read full obituary
